Polygon vs Ethereum: Speed and Cost Comparison

Polygon is significantly faster and cheaper than Ethereum for everyday crypto transfers. Here is a complete side-by-side comparison of the two networks.

Why Is Polygon Faster Than Ethereum?

Polygon is a Layer-2 scaling solution built on top of Ethereum. It processes transactions on its own high-throughput PoS sidechain and periodically checkpoints state to the Ethereum mainnet for security. This architecture allows Polygon to achieve 65,000 TPS versus Ethereum’s ~15 TPS.

Ethereum’s slower speed stems from its conservative block size and 12-second block time, designed to maximize decentralization and security. Polygon trades some of this decentralization for speed by using a smaller validator set.

When to Use Polygon vs Ethereum

Use Polygon when: you need fast, cheap transfers; you are interacting with DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, or games; you want to avoid high gas fees.

Use Ethereum when: you need maximum security and decentralization; you are settling high-value transactions where a few dollars in fees is acceptable; the protocol you are using only exists on Ethereum mainnet.

Polygon uses side chains to process transactions, allowing the network to facilitate thousands of transfers simultaneously while maintaining compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine.

Polygon remains the most widely used Layer-2 by transaction volume with over 6 billion transactions processed and 53,000+ active dApps as of 2024.
